Some more-or-less recent doodles. The first one is from this & the last one was heavily influenced by Kentucky Route Zero (obviously)

Reworked the way death happens in Even the Stars

nick-gavan:

The soundtrack for Even the Stars just went online. It’s a PWYW release with a creative commons license. I’ve talked about it in a previous post.

alpha-beta-gamer:

S.W.A.G (Super Wreckless Awesome Gangsta) is a rhythmic first person shooter set in the 90’s where you roam dangerous streets and knock-out your enemy rappers with a finely timed sound blast from your golden boombox.

Gameplay is pretty basic at the moment, but it is still very early in development.  It’s a fun (and tough) game for what it is though, with different enemy types that approach you in different ways and a cool retro visual style.  As the game is developed, we’d love to see other music to blast enemies from and some more gameplay element features.

Like Harmonix’s Chroma, S.W.A.G. looks set to offer up some fun rhythm-based FPS action, only one of the games features a golden boombox gun though!

Alpha Beta Gamer just made a showcase of S.W.A.G. and we have no idea why now but… Well it sure is cool !

I am doing (or rather, have already done) the soundtrack for an indie game called Even the Stars by polclarissou. As the title implies, it’s about space, namely - traversing it in a spaceship, warping to different locations, exploring, aging, witnessing the vastness of the pitch-black void and so on. It was originally created for Venus Patrol’s Space Cowboy game jam which closes tomorrow so I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a good outcome.

The best outcome would be, of course, to continue working on the game and release it in full, packed-to-the-brim, glory. Right now it’s like a space haiku but my mind can’t help wondering how far can this idea be taken and what can be done with it. I’m very happy to be working on this so I want this journey to last…

and last…

and last…

Working on Even the Stars is very different from working on Kairo, there is a lot of back-and-forth going on between Paul and I, a dramatically different situation from Kairo. I love video games and always dreamed of making one but unfortunately lack the needed brain-functions to program, so instead I want to come as close to the core game-making when submitting music.

One of the ideas that sprung out quite early was something that Paul suggested - generating music from stems. I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to create something like that so I created normal tracks (trying to keep them minimalistic) and then cut them into pieces. Through some coding magic they are played< at random intervals and given different pitches and panning, It works surprisingly good and helps give some unique atmosphere to the countless planets in the Even the Stars universe.

I’m also very proud of myself (maybe needlessly) but I’ve also “designed” (that is too strong of a word) and created the samples for the radio system that is in game. I got the idea for this when I was looking for a station on an old radio I have down at work. Different radiostations were melted together in a cacophonic noise and they seemed so… otherworldly. A good fit for a game about traversing space which enhances the loneliness I hope. You’re out there, drifting, catching these weird waves, snippets of converstations of people you don’t know, trying to make a sense of it even though you are destined to fail.

The soundtrack will be released at a later date and I will be using the Nicholas Gavan moniker for it (instead of Wounds like the soundtrack for Kairo). The main reason should be clear from the earlier long-ass post about changing the name, the reason for not using my real name is simple - I’m not comfortable with it being out there like this.

And Nicholas Gavan sounds cooler, no?

Nick’s bandcamp is here though it is pretty barren right now, I’ll try to mend that soon.

Finally, you can play the game now, completely free on its website with a downloadable version coming in the near future.

See you, space cowboys.
